Movement in the mortgage market?

Since the days of the credit crunch, a 95% LTV mortgage has seemed like a thing of the past, but a new product launched today by the Skipton Building Society could herald welcome news for first-time buyers this spring.

This follows extensive coverage earlier this week of Northern Rock’s decision to offer 90% mortgages – a move seen as controversial by some, given the bank’s past association with profligate lending.

Higher interest rates mean that buyers opting for these loans won’t have have it all their own way – but with ever-increasing rental costs it will be the right move for many. Will this be the start of a more benign mortgage market in the months ahead?

Still lending – and open for mortgage business

From coverage in the media, you’d be forgiven for thinking that lending is a thing of the past – but as a recent initiative from one of our clients shows, this is far from the truth.

The Hanley Economic Building Society has launched a new marketing awareness campaign to promote the message ‘We’re Lending’. ‘Freddie’ the Fiesta will be out and about on the roads in Staffordshire until Christmas.

Commenting on the campaign was Rob Hassall, Marketing & E-Commerce Manager from The Hanley:

“There hasn’t been a day in the past year that the media hasn’t reported on stories relating to the inability to get a mortgage. At The Hanley we have been constantly open for mortgage business and were trying to break the perception that it’s impossible to get a mortgage.”

Turn on the tap . . . then turn it off again!

As one of our clients discovered recently, in a changing marketplace it’s vital to be able to react quickly and adjust your offerings to suit the climate.

When NS&I took its Index-Linked Certificates off the market in July, savers found that interest offered by other accounts could be insufficient to keep pace with inflation.

National Counties Building Society breached the gap with by launching a five-year Isa paying 1pc plus the change in the Retail Prices Index (RPI) – the same deal that NS&I offered on its Index-Linked Certificates. Just two weeks later, demand had been so great that the product was already over-subscribed and was closed to new applicants on 26th August.
